Trump Rally

Jim Lustenader
USA

Honorable Mention

"Trump Rally"

The Naked Cowboy is something of an urban legend in NYC, so when I saw him performing on behalf of Trump in front of the candidate's eponymous tower I knew it was a fantastic photo op. Given the heat of the campaign, I was interested in capturing the energy of Trump's supporters and the reactions of bystanders as the Cowboy belted out a ballad he wrote in Trump's honor. And the 'Rump' was a perfect footnote to the occasion.

Biography: Street photography has a special cinematic character, combining elements of photojournalism, documentary and pure surprise to catch unguarded moments. Spontaneity, immediacy, serendipity, empathy: each plays a role in a successful shot. But to me the thing that makes a street photo memorable is an element of visual tension, whether between subjects or between a subject and their surroundings. Tension gives a photo intimacy and depth within a social context, allowing the viewer to pause and decipher possible meanings. It encourages imagination and raises a question or two.
