Paul Foley is an Australian fine-art photographer based in Newcastle, New South Wales. He has made photographs for more than fifty years, including a 35-year career as a professional photographer.
His personal work ranges across landscape, the sea, abstraction and the human form, connected by an interest in light, shadow, time, place and memory.
I think of much of what I do simply as finding pictures. I look for relationships between light and shadow, lines and shapes, landscape and humanity. The subject matters, but it is not always the reason for making the photograph. I am interested in what happens when a place, moment or familiar object becomes something else within the frame.
My first attraction to photography came through the surf magazines of the 1970s. That interest developed through travel, study and mentoring.
Since leaving commercial photography, personal work has become my focus. The Newcastle coast remains important, but I am equally drawn to people, cities and observations. Colour, monochrome, long exposure and abstraction are choices made in response to each picture.
My photographs have received awards and been exhibited in Australia and overseas. } ?>
