USA Honorable Mention Photojournalism Professional "A Helping Hand" A son gives a helping hand to his mother as they walk from their shelter down a dirt road. I had always been photographing my family, but when my son was born with many special needs, photography became a challenge. Among many of his special needs, he has Autism; getting him to look at the camera was nearly impossible. I know so many parents like myself who didn't have any great photographs of our child. Taking him to a photographer was quite honestly sad and torture for all of us. They just didn't understand how to work with him. We always left feeling depressed and felt like we had nowhere to go when it came to family portraits. My son inspired me to launch my business, and I am now a professional photographer who is dedicated to photographing all families, with a special focus on children with special needs and their families. I enjoy giving a gentle hug to the parents of these amazing children and seeing the look of happiness on their faces when they preview the portraits of their child. I hold my sessions on location or where their child is most comfortable and happy. I follow the child’s cues; if they are a mover, I am following. If your child is immobile, I take that lead too. I have compassion, patience and understanding which drives me in my career. |
