"Flying Tiger, from the "Night Journey" series"
This series explores dreams and memory and provides pictorial access to the unconscious. Using the shadow as metaphor, I enjoy creating works that portray a sense of surprise and wonder that in turn conjure up childhood imaginings, fairy tales and nightmares. By using mythic characters and incongruous objects, I delve into the fantastic to create phantomlike tableaux’s that capture lost and forgotten fragments of experience and emotion. The inspiration came from an inquiry into the subconscious. Using myself as subject, I was tape recorded in a sleep laboratory while awakened from REM sleep to gain access to the subconscious. The laboratory audio recordings were used as inspiration to create the photographs for this series. The gestures and narratives are created by photographing shadows of models and props in my studio using a 4x5 view camera with a digital back.
