James Porto
USA Nominee Fine Art Professional "Wild Moon" An image from the Winged Women series James Porto is an American photographic artist (b.1960). His constructed fantastical worlds balance the real with the unreal; the photographs are sumptuously rich in texture and detail. Throughout his career James has created thought provoking images that challenge the viewers sense of reality. He received a Bachelor of Science in Professional Photography degree from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1982, moved to New York City and began working as a photo assistant. He opened his photography studio in New York City in 1985. His specialty was producing multiple image special effect photographs for advertising and editorial clients using elaborate darkroom and in-camera techniques. In 1992, he began to use Adobe Photoshop as a digital imaging tool, and this eventually replaced his previous non-digital techniques. He received a grant from New York Fellowship for the Arts to make a series of sculptural cubist images and has since exhibited his work in New York City, nationally and internationally. His collaborations include working with Joanne Gair, make-up artist and body painter for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue 2001, an International branding campaign for the Blue Man Group, participation in a group show of photography at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cincinnati, Ohio, and more recently photographs of the Radio City Rockettes for a book project. . Some of his advertising and editorial clients also include, Absolut, Adidas, AT&T, Bell Helicopters, Epson, IBM, Ilford, Kodak, Lockheed, Motorola, Nike, Pepsi, Reebok, Seagrams, Showtime, Sony, and Texas Instruments. Some of his editorial clients include, American Photo, Art Direction, Business Week, ESPN, Fortune, Forbes, Glamour, GQ, New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, New York, Photo Italia, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, Time, and Wired. |
