Ruben Buhagiar

This is the motto which guides and best describes the work of Maltese photographer Ruben Buhagiar of Mosta. Ruben is an active member of the Malta Institute of Professional Photography , MIPP (www.mipp-malta.com), whom he joined in 2007 following his return from Parma, where he had spent just under 4 years. In fact, he started his professional photographic services precisely from his base in this northern Italian Province. However, he has been taken pictures since the age of 10, and had entered the Malta Photographic Society at the age of 15, where he was exposed to all the top photographers on the Island at the time. He is also a member of the latter society and regularly gives lectures in their meetings, and forms pat of their pool of judges. Ruben is the mind and energy behind RubenBuhagiarPHOTOGRAPHY, a growing business aimed at providing quality photographic services. Ruben is a keen promoter of new practices and developments and insists in his quests in keeping photography as an art form, as typified in his various lectures and presentations, indeed his work. Life is beautiful, even in its saddest aspects, and because it is lived, it is worth recording by the creation of images which epitomize the various emotions experienced by the photographer at the very same instant the images were created. Ruben has been described as a romantic expressionist, and his images always tend to involve the viewer considerably in such a way that the viewer might in fact form part of the image. There is always a story, a fourth dimension or message involved. His style has been described as bold and sharp aimed at depicting the atmosphere of the situation and tends towards a street photojournalistic touch epitomized by the �decisive moment� A few milestones: 1985: Entered Malta Photographic Society 1988 � date: Constantly had works exhibited at the Open Annual Competition held by the MPS 2004: Start of RubenBuhagiarPhotography as the provider of professional photographic services in Parma Italy 2007: Joins the MIPP and the SWPP 2007 � date: Regular Participant in the SWPP and various Golds and Silvers awarded for his works. 2007: First exhibition in 2007 �Life�, together with local painter Noel Attard and ceramist Joseph Agius 2008: Award of Licentiate after successful submission of Panel with the MIPP. Reciprocal Licentiate with the British SWPP. 2008: Election to the post of Honorary Executive Secretary to the MIPP Executive Committee 2009: Joint Exhibition �ILLUMINARIA� at no 68, St Lucy Street, Valletta � Subject: TUSCANY 2009: 1st Prize in Kind�s Auto Sales 80th Anniversary National Photo Competition with his entry �Back to the Future� 2009: Honourable Mention at the MPS Open annual Exhibition with his work �Awaiting Action� together with three other acceptances 2009: Lecture on �Catching the Atmosphere� led to invitations to lecture at the MIPP Convention 2010 and at the SWPP International Convention in London in January 2010. 2009 October: Article by Ing Charles Mifsud on www.di-ve.com 2009: 6-page article on British Photography Magazine �Imagemaker� - Chronicles from the World of Mood (12000 distributions) 2009: Selected to judge the SWPP image competition at the November 2009 MIPP Convention alongside 4 other famous judges (Lord Damian McGillicuddy, Albert Demarco, Michael Turner and Kevin Casha) 2009: Award of Associateship after successful submission of Panel with the MIPP. The theme of the panel was � La Serenita� e Lo Spettacolo della Toscana�. Reciprocal Associate status with the British SWPP. 2009: Acceptance of 2 images in the 15th International Contest organized by the Fotocineclub Sambenedettese in San Benedetto Del Tronto in Italy. Only Maltese with accepted works among 24 countries represented whereby only 19% of the works presented (1054 in total) were accepted. 2010: Invitation to lecture at The Societies� Convention 2010 at the London Novotel, whereby he gave 2 lectures: �CATCHING THE ATMOSPHERE� and �VISUALIZATION�. 2010: Participation in collective exhibition �UNITY IN DIVERSITY� at De La Salle Palace in VALLETTA with a set of 7 images under the series �Dancing with Waves�. 2010: First prize is ECO Competition organized by Frame the World in conjunction with Airmalta. 2010: Chosen as the photographer for the 2011 edition of the Falzon Group Calendar 2011: Invitation to lecture at The Societies� Convention 2011 at the London Novotel, whereby he gave 2 lectures: �INJECTING MOOD INTO YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY� and �WHAT ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHY? � The Creative Process�. 2011: Participation in �THAT il-MIJA� exhibition at Palazzo De La Salle 2011: Chosen as main judge in BOV Club photo competition 2011: Invited to judge at MPS Open Annual Competition 2011 � B&W Print category 2010 - 11: One of the driving members behind PROJECT: TKECNIR � KITCHEN WORK, project which saw theater work, DVD production, a publication and exhibition at Mdina Council Hall launched on 30th June 2011 2011: First publication: TKECNIR � Kitchen Work 2011: Article on TKECKNIR �If you can�t stand the Heat� � by Peter Farrugia on The Sunday Times 24th July 2011. 2011: Judge at the 10th National Art Competition and Exhibition is being organised by and held at the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce 2011: Participation in the MIPP-Valverde joint exhibition- MALTA STREET SCENES - in Sicily with the print �Passing By�. 2011: Member of the Royal Photographic Society 2011-2012: Currently working on a second publication on NAXXAR and on a personal publication due out in 2013. 2011: Acceptance of 2 images in the 15th International Contest organized by the Fotocineclub Sambenedettese in San Benedetto Del Tronto in Italy. 2012: Featured in Lithuanian publication �IN FOCUS� and had his set on� DAILY LIFE� chosen and exhibited in VILNIUS 2012 � Participated in the RPS Advisory Day in Brussels as part of his collaborations with the English-speaking Viewfinders Club of Belgium 2007-2012 Provider of professional photographic services where the only advert id by word of mouth.
